World-Class Ethernet Performance

LinkX™ Variable Optical Attenuators

Mellanox LinkX UltraVOA™ Array uses silicon photonics to deliver reliable solid-state current controlled optical attenuation enabling ultra-fast control of signal levels in optical networks. The Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA) consists of reliable silicon p-i-n diode structures built across silicon optical waveguides. As current is applied through the diodes, the free carriers in each waveguide absorb photons, creating current-controlled variable attenuation.

Because the physical effect is based on electronic control, the response time of the VOA is fast— less than 1 µs in typical situations. This VOA is well suited to the most demanding applications in metro and long-haul transmission applications. The high speed of these VOAs makes them particularly useful for optical transient suppression, optical channel blocking and analog signal modulation applications.

HPC-X

Adapter Ethernet Software

Remote Direct Memory Management (RDMA) is the remote memory management capability that allows server to server data movement directly between application memory without any CPU involvement. RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) is a mechanism to provide this efficient data transfer with very low latencies on lossless Ethernet networks. With advances in data center convergence over reliable Ethernet, Mellanox’s NICs with RoCE uses the proven and efficient RDMA transport to provide the platform for deploying RDMA technology in mainstream data center application at 10GbE, 40GbE and 56GbE link-speed. The Mellanox NICs with its hardware offload support takes advantage of this efficient RDMA transport (InfiniBand) services over Ethernet to deliver ultra-low latency for performance-critical and transaction intensive applications such as financial, data base, storage, and content delivery networks.

Mellanox’ ConnectX-3 Pro supports RoCE which allows RDMA to be used across both L2 and L3 networks thanks to IP and UDP headers.

Mellanox InfiniBand and VPI drivers, protocol software and tools are supported by respective major OS Vendors and Distributions Inbox or by Mellanox where noted. Mellanox also supports all major processor architectures.

Mellanox InfiniBand drivers and ULPs have been tested and verified for support on all its previous generation and current generation network adapters (HCAs and NICs) as noted in the OS Support matrix and includes support for all Major OS vendor release.

Poll Mode Driver (PMD) for DPDK

Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK)

DPDK is a set of libraries and optimized NIC drivers for fast packet processing in user space. DPDK provides a framework and common API for high speed networking applications.

Mellanox Poll Mode Driver for DPDK

Mellanox Poll Mode Driver (PMD) is designed for fast packet processing and low latency by providing kernel bypass for receive, send, and by avoiding the interrupt processing performance overhead.
mlx4 is the DPDK Poll-Mode Driver for Mellanox ConnectX®-3/ConnectX®-3 Pro Ethernet adapters, and mlx5 is the DPDK Poll-Mode Driver for Mellanox ConnectX®-4/ConnectX®-4 Lx Ethernet adapters. These driver are written on top of libibverbs and are using accelerated verbs. Mellanox mlx4 PMD supports bare metal, KVM, and VMware on (PPC) Power8 and x86_64 architectures. Mellanox mlx5 PMD supports bare metal on x86_64 architecture.

Starting with DPDK 2.0, mlx4 is part of DPDK and is available with the DPDK code that can be found at dpdk.org. Installation instructions for the latest DPDK and the optimized libraries can be found here.

Firmware Tools

Mellanox offers two firmware tools to update and query adapter firmware:
  • mlxup - a Mellanox firmware update and query utility. The utility enables scanning the server machine for available Mellanox adapters and indicates whether firmware update is required for each adapter. To make it easier for our customers the mlxup can also automatically update the latest firmware either from the web, or use binaries provided locally. For other functionalities such as card configuration and binary creation, please refer to the Mellanox Firmware Tools (MFT) webpage.
  • MFT - The Mellanox Firmware Tools (MFT) package is a set of firmware management tools used to generate a standard or customized Mellanox firmware image, query for firmware information, and burn a firmware image.

High Performance Computing

Storage

As new, faster storage technologies have evolved, the storage bottleneck has moved from the storage media to the I/O interconnect.
